Finished Week 1

Week 1 went well. I'm still on the first module of my Chinese language course. Learning Chinese will definitely be a long challenge, but I'm not in a rush. My husband was making fun of me because I got so excited on the second day when I was able to pronounce the words. LOL.

On the piano, I'm almost able to play Wayfaring Stranger smoothly. That's very exciting for me, because I've been stuck on that song since before we moved to Belize! Although I do have to admit, I didn't practice consistently before. Maybe because I already know how to play well enough for church, I got comfortable. What I like about this program is that it teaches me different patterns. Learning this is definitely helping me to be more compassionate with the ladies I'm teaching at church. Feeling like a beginner has a way of humbling us. (I'm teaching typing and piano on Saturdays. Maybe why I'm suddenly trying to improve myself. LOL)

Just this week of practice has helped my typing tremendously! I almost typed all of this post without looking. I've noticed that looking at the keyboard while I type is really just a very bad habit. When I'm practicing I don't look, but when I'm typing at any other time I look down. I'm going to try and be more careful this coming week.

Literature Essays

Lately Rhiannon has been writing literature essays. We are using LLATL Gold British Literature which we like, but it doesn't provide any writing instruction. So, I made a literature essay map for her. Rhiannon is the type of student who needs very clear directions so, it is working out very well for her. You're welcome to use it and adapt it to suit your own needs. Since I use Office 2007, it is not compatible with older versions of Office. Let me know if you need a different version.

I want to learn to speak Chinese

I know I haven't posted in a while, and I really want to try and keep it up. I figure if I post my goals and progress I will be accountable. So, my goals are to learn Chinese, learn to touch type faster, and learn to play piano better. I know I can't just make goals without a plan how to accomplish them.

My plan
1. Practice piano with this program at church after prayer while Riri watches her Algebra video.
2. Practice Chinese with this program daily after piano practice for at least 30 min. or more.
3. Practice typing with Mavis Beacon Typing for at least 20 min a day after breakfast.

How will I know I accomplished my goals?

1. I will practice piano until I finish the book.
2. I will practice Chinese until I am able to converse fluently with the Chinese people in Belize.
3. I will practice touch typing until I can touch type faster without looking than I can type while looking. (40wpm)

I'll post every Friday to update my progress.

Free Foreign Language Courses

I recently purchased my daughter a Spanish course from Step by Step Spanish. It's the best we've tried and believe me we have tried plenty. My daughter is doing great! We have seen great results and she is only in unit 4. The actual name of the program is Programmatic Spanish. Since I want to learn French, I did a web search to see if anyone was selling the French version. Well guess what? It is out of copyright and in the public domain!
http://fsi-language-courses.org/Content.php
Not only is the French available, but so is the Spanish course I paid for!
http://fsi-language-courses.org/Content.php?page=Spanish
I almost feel like a fool for paying for something I could get for free, but I would never had heard of it in the first place if I hadn't bought it. It's a program developed by the government and covers 1 year of college Spanish or 2 years of high school level Spanish.  It includes the student textbook, instructor guide, workbook, and audio. Check it out!

Storm Warning by Billy Graham

Killer earthquakes, devastating hurricanes, bloody wars - the list can go on and on. But what does all of this have to do with the return of Christ? Storm Warning by Billy Graham answers this question plus many more. In order to gain a better understanding of what this book is about, let's examine what it is not about. This book is not about specific theological issues concerning the Second Coming of Christ, the Rapture of the Church, the Tribulation, or the Millennium. I would consider it more of a warning to be ready for Christ's Return and how we can be deviated off of our heaven bound course.

Storm Warning will definitely challenge and inspire the average churchgoer and unbeliever to dig deeper into God's word and not to fall into the traps of this world. I enjoyed reading the personal illustrations Mr. Graham used throughout Storm Warning, as well as all the scripture he used. Overall, I have to say I enjoyed reading Storm Warning and would recommend others read this book. However, just like any other book (except the bible) there will be bones to pick. (Thank you, BookSneeze, for the free copy of Storm Warning.)

Bible Reading

I've been really busy this summer, so I didn't keep up with my daily or weekly postings. However, I did keep up with my plan to read the entire bible again. I finished!!! Now I'm reading Philippians daily. I read a book about how to study your bible and it recommends picking a short book in the bible which deals with issues you deal with.

Homeschool Plans for 2010-2011 school year 10th grade

I'm confused! I have ordered so much great curriculum for Rhiannon that it's hard to choose for next year. Maybe if  I write down what I know I'll be using, I can work out the rest.
Algebra 2 - VideoText Algebra with some CLEP prep. We want to take CLEP test next October.
Science - Apologia Biology & Science Roots (2nd half) with some CLEP prep. We want to take CLEP test next October.
English II -  DGP(Daily Grammar Practice), Rummy Roots (Vocabulary), Jump In Writing (finish from last year), Jensen's Format Writing, Smarr: A Guide to Critical Writing, Grammar, and Style, read 10 great books & do at least 4 Literature Guides. (Does this seem like a lot?)
Health Apologia Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy and Physiology - I know it's not technically a health book, but if you read through it, you'll notice lots of similarities. Also, since Riri is leaning towards a career in nursing, she needs to build her knowledge. She'll be taking the highschool version of anatomy soon, so I'd like to give her a head start while also acquiring credit for health.
History - ? I'm debating between Mystery of History II or All American History I. I already have both, but not sure which direction I want to go for next year. I think my problem lies in not having enough time left for all we want to learn in history. We really like Mystery of History, but she won't be writing any American History and we need American History credit. However, the same publisher did publish All American History. I found the on-line samples, and loved it. I've already ordered it, but since we're in Belize I won't be getting it until July. So my problem is we want to do MOH I, MOH II, MOH III, AAH I, AAH II, Economics, and American Government for high school! We need to cram 6 years of work into 4 years. We've already finished 9th grade and MOH I, hence the dilemma. Any suggestions?
Foreign Language - ? Any suggestions?
Computer Science - ? Any suggestions?

Review of 2009-2010 Homeschool year

This past school year was very productive for Rhiannon. We tried some new curriculum we loved and some we quit. Our goals for the year were to improve in math, writing, and spelling. Praise God, she did tremendously!

She decided she wants to be a nurse, so that encouraged me to spend more than I normally would on some of her curriculum, but it was definitely worth it. She is really understanding her math now. I know that math is important in Texas in order to be accepted into the RN program. I actually bought her math used, but it was still $120 including shipping. But compared to the new price of $500, it wasn't too bad.

Something I changed this year was our breaks. Depending on our church schedule, we are taking a week off every 5-6 weeks. That has helped us not to burn out! Homeschool Tracker makes it very easy to adjust anything we need during the year.

Overall, I'm very happy about how our school year turned out. Since we had to take off 2 months during the school year to move to Belize, we still have about 5 weeks left.

We loved the following:
VideoText Algebra
Mystery of History I
Apologia Physical Science
Apples Spelling II
Rummy Roots
Apologia Jump In Writing
Grammar Made Easy: Writing A Step Above
Homeschool Tracker - not really a curriculum, but I love it!

We liked the following:
Science Roots
Streams of Civilization I (We did it as a read aloud 1st semester for history)
The Book of Virtues (Dan & Riri did it as a read aloud 2/3 of year for character study)
Call to Courage (Dan & Riri did it as a read aloud 1/3 of year for character study)
Mavis Beacon Typing
Children's History of the World (We did it as a read aloud 2nd semester for history)
Classical Roots A

We quit the following:
IEW- writing curriculum
Bob Jones Spanish I
Sequential Spelling
Daily Grammar Practice (Now that we have more of a foundation in diagramming, we're going to try this one again next year. It only takes 5 minutes a day.)
Trail Guide of Bible Geography
Drawing with Children
Abeka Lit Of Places

We walked 2 miles this morning and yesterday morning! Can you believe I am getting up at 4:45am to meet the ladies at church for our walks?! I still don't believe it. I even went to bed at 8:30pm, but of course I didn't go to sleep until later around 10pm. I did try though. I don't think I've ever done that:)

We're supposed to start walking every other weekday. So that would be Mon., Wed., and Friday.

Daily Bible Reading Sunday

OK. I made a big boo boo. I totally skipped Jeremiah and Lamentations. I figured it out because I read my bible at church and used my notebook planner. I read Jeremiah as scheduled in my notebook and when I came home I realized my mistake 14 chapters later. I probably wouldn't have noticed, but since I started a new page in my planner I had Jeremiah listed instead of Ezekiel. I thought something was funny at church when I read my bible. I felt misplaced and even re-read some of it. Ha Ha.

I found my mistake. I actually read Jeremiah 1-2 last Sunday, but put on this blog Ezekiel. So, the next day Monday I started using Biblegateway and just started where I thought I left off in Ezekiel. Today I went back to reading my physical bible, so I just found my mistake. I will just go back to Ezekiel later.

Cash envelopes - Part 3

I decided to add some verses you can use for the cash envelopes.

  • Proverbs 19:15, NKJV Laziness casts one into a deep sleep, and an idle person will suffer hunger.
  • Proverbs 10:4 He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.
  • Proverbs 12:24 The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute.
  • Proverbs 12:27 The slothful man roasteth not that which he took in hunting: but the substance of a diligent man is precious.
  • Proverbs 13:4 The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat. The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied.
  • Proverbs 21:5 The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want.
  • Proverbs 27:23 Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds.
  • Galatians 6:9 ESV And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.

Cash envelopes - Part 2

I was talking to my sister yesterday about using the cash envelope system. Previously I'd written about the actual envelopes themselves and not about the system. So today I'm going to go over the system. I've also included some informative links at the bottom of the page and even a video.

  • First make a budget. I have a spreadsheet I made (which I'll upload soon) where I enter my monthly allocations.
  • Once you've allocated all your incoming finances for the month, withdraw enough money for the week and put it in the proper envelopes.
  • If self-disciple and self-control are an issue, write scripture verses on the envelopes to keep accountable to yourself and to God.
  • During the week, keep tack of how much money is left in each envelope and spend accordingly.
  • When the money is gone it's gone! Don't pull from another envelope or you will shoot yourself in the foot. If you get tempted to take from another envelope, read the scripture verses on your envelopes.

Homeschool Buyers Co-op Review

I recently purchased a wonderful planner for my daughter through Homeschool Buyers Co-Op. One of the group buys they offered was for a 4 year highschool planner. Rhiannon is really enjoying this! Homeschool Buyers Co-op made the transaction easy and affordable. I received the planner at a 50% off discount, when everyone else only offered a 20% off discount. The only thing I would have liked to be done differently is to be given an actual date to expect the product instead of an estimated date of 3 business days after group buy is finished.  That just leaves too much to interpretation. Overall, this was a great deal and I'm glad I used Homeschool Buyers Co-op!Click here for more information.

OK, we got back to exercising now that revival is over. By the way, revival was awesome! We had a lot of visitors, who got saved.

We walked 2 miles today. The AHA walk. Today it did not seem hard at all. However, I really took it easy because I knew I hadn't been consistent in over a week and a half.

Here are some testimonies from a concert at BTL park.

Daily Bible Reading & Exercise Saturday 3/06/10

2 Chronicles 35 - 36
Psalms 107 - 108

OK! We did the 1 mile express walk on the Leslie Sansone website. It's on the right side half way down the page under WalkTV Video. I really like this walk. It's short, but it gets you sweating!

I finished 2 Chronicles today, and I can truly say I feel like I learned more this time reading it than before (all the sermons I've heard over the years sure helped because when I read through the first time I was more trying to capture the flow and history then trying to really see where it could apply to me).

Hezekiah, a lesson not to become proud in victories.  God will try us or test us as the New Living Translation puts it.

Manasseh, a picture of us before we got saved and how through desperation (or as the bible says in the New Living Translation - in deep distress) we can turn to God and be really repentant.

Josiah, seek God before making any decisions because God can speak to anyone He wants. God will even use the unsaved to accomplish His plans, so make sure you seek God and hear from Him.

Weigh In

Ok, I decided to become accountable about my weight! I finally decided to lose some weight. It came about in an usual way. I know people wanted me to lose weight, but I didn't want to. I just did not feel any motivation to do so. (Man I sound like a rebel!) In my head I knew all the right reasons for doing so, but to no avail. It's like my husband always preaches you have to engage your will to change and mine wasn't. LOL!

So anyway, one day I found some recordings for women I wanted to hear. Each one lasted about an hour, so I went walking as I listened to them. That took place the last week of January. The next week I went running with Marlini from church. That made me very sore, but I was glad I had gone walking the week before or I would not have made it! Then I was talking to the ladies in church about some walking video clips on the internet, Leslie Sansone American Heart Association, and we decided to start walking at church on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays. So, the next week we started walking. I feel so good now! I guess the lesson is just start doing it even if you don't want to and the motivation will come later.

We took grandma Irene to the Maya Ruins where I walked all the way to the top with no problem! When we first got to Belize we took Pastor Cliff Williams and his wife to some other smaller ruins where I had a hard time making it to the top! So, just a few short weeks and my body started feeling much better. I actually want to play basketball again, but we need to find a basketball first. You wouldn't believe the prices here. $100 for a basketball!

We bought a scale yesterday at this shop called American Imports. The scale is The Biggest Loser by Taylor Body Fat Analyzer and Scale. I weighed myself at 10:25am 2/26/10 Friday. I want to record my weight, body fat, water, muscle, BMI, and BMR every week on Friday morning.

2 Chronicles 2 - 4
Psalms 73 - 74

* As I was reading Psalm 73 I remembered a sermon Pastor Todd preached about that psalm. He also used psalm 84 if I'm not mistaken. Somehow I had intertwined those two psalms into one in my mind. Soon after that sermon we started singing Better is One Day in church. I usually think of Psalm 73 when I'm singing that song. I miss Pastor Todd and Jennifer. :)

Psalm 73

A Psalm of Asaph.
 1 Truly God is good to Israel,
         To such as are pure in heart.
 2 But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled;
         My steps had nearly slipped.
 3 For I was envious of the boastful,
         When I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

 4 For there are no pangs in their death,
         But their strength is firm.
 5 They are not in trouble as other men,
         Nor are they plagued like other men.
 6 Therefore pride serves as their necklace;
         Violence covers them like a garment.
 7 Their eyes bulge[a] with abundance;
         They have more than heart could wish.
 8 They scoff and speak wickedly concerning oppression;
         They speak loftily.
 9 They set their mouth against the heavens,
         And their tongue walks through the earth.

 10 Therefore his people return here,
         And waters of a full cup are drained by them.
 11 And they say, “How does God know?
         And is there knowledge in the Most High?”
 12 Behold, these are the ungodly,
         Who are always at ease;
         They increase in riches.
 13 Surely I have cleansed my heart in vain,
         And washed my hands in innocence.
 14 For all day long I have been plagued,
         And chastened every morning.

 15 If I had said, “I will speak thus,”
         Behold, I would have been untrue to the generation of Your children.
 16 When I thought how to understand this,
         It was too painful for me—
 17 Until I went into the sanctuary of God;
         Then I understood their end.

 18 Surely You set them in slippery places;
         You cast them down to destruction.
 19 Oh, how they are brought to desolation, as in a moment!
         They are utterly consumed with terrors.
 20 As a dream when one awakes,
         So, Lord, when You awake,
         You shall despise their image.

 21 Thus my heart was grieved,
         And I was vexed in my mind.
 22 I was so foolish and ignorant;
         I was like a beast before You.
 23 Nevertheless I am continually with You;
         You hold me by my right hand.
 24 You will guide me with Your counsel,
         And afterward receive me to glory.

 25 Whom have I in heaven but You?
         And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You.
 26 My flesh and my heart fail;
         But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

 27 For indeed, those who are far from You shall perish;
         You have destroyed all those who desert You for harlotry.
 28 But it is good for me to draw near to God;
         I have put my trust in the Lord GOD,
         That I may declare all Your works.

2 Kings 25 - 1 Chronicles 1
Psalms 43-44

Interesting note:
Rhiannon asked me a few days ago how Australia has so many animals if it's separated from other lands. This question was in context to what she is learning in her science. We use Apologia and are studying physical science right now. Secular science tells us the continents drifted apart over millions of years - continental shift - uniformitarianism. Our science points toward catastrophism - the idea that Earth has been affected in the past by sudden, short-lived, violent events, possibly worldwide in scope. So, we understand the flood was violent in nature - catastrophic and caused the continents to separate. Hence the question - if this is true and all the animals died during the flood except the ones in the ark and the earth separated how can Australia have animals? Well God is good and he answered her question! I was reading my bible this morning and came across 1 Chronicles 1:19 Two sons were born to Eber: One was named Peleg, because in his time the earth divided: his brother was named Joktan.
If you read all of 1 Chronicles 1 you will see Pelag's genealogy. Noah - Shem - Arphaxad - Eber - Peleg, so therefore the earth didn't split until 3 generations after the flood! Plenty of time for animals to arrive in Australia after the flood.

1 Kings 17-18
Psalms 13-14

I was reading The Student Bible today and it made a great point. I've always associated  the widow with having great faith, but what about Elijah? He definitely had to have faith to trust a poor woman with his upkeep. He knew it was really God providing for him and not the poor widow. That is faith! How many times do we think our husbands (if you want to become a stay at home wife) can't provide the fiances we need? We think oh it's easy for Elijah to have faith, but if you really think of it in context then it should be easy for us to have faith in our husband's ability to provide for us, because ultimately it's God who will provide.  Not so easy sometimes, right? "What is impossible with man is possible with God." (Luke 18:29)

Cash envelopes

I received this great link. She shows you how to keep your cash envelopes all together in your wallet. Very Pretty.

I use the envelope system here in Belize because the bank fees are ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, we still have a bank account. We just pull out the money we need on a weekly basis from the atm and put it in envelopes. In the US we used our checks for everything, but here they charge you for every single check you use, plus they charge you to withdraw money from a teller. The only thing they don't charge for is using the atm. And going to the atm every day is not cool.

That's where the envelopes come in.  If you don't use envelopes (or some kind of budgeting tactic) to keep your money separated, you will run out of money before the end of the month because everything here is so expensive

As Christians we have to be good stewards, so the envelope system has definitely helped. Dave Ramsey, the author of Total Money Makeover, also advocates the envelope system.

This tutorial will just be an easier way to implement the envelope system. Lately, I have to dig through my purse to find the envelopes. Can you say time saver? You don't even need to make the pretty envelopes, just use regular envelopes and stitch them together per the tutorial.
